If you’ve been researching gutter protection systems, chances are you’ve come across LeafFilter—one of the biggest names in the industry. Marketed as a “maintenance-free” solution to clogged gutters, LeafFilter has become a popular choice among homeowners across the U.S. and Canada.
But not all customers are satisfied. In fact, LeafFilter is at the center of a major class action lawsuit, raising questions about the company’s advertising claims, product performance, and customer service. Here’s everything you need to know about the LeafFilter lawsuit, and what it could mean for you.
What Is the LeafFilter Lawsuit About?
In December 2020, a group of consumers filed a class action lawsuit against LeafFilter North, LLC, claiming that the company’s micromesh gutter guard system was defective and misleadingly marketed.

The lawsuit, titled Zilinsky et al. v. LeafFilter North, LLC, was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. The primary complaint? That LeafFilter failed to deliver on its promise of keeping gutters clog-free—leading to overflowing gutters, roof leaks, and costly home damage.
Common Complaints in the LeafFilter Class Action
The following issues were repeatedly cited by homeowners who joined the lawsuit:
- Debris Buildup on Top of the Filter: While the micromesh system prevents debris from entering the gutter, it still allows leaves, pine needles, and shingle grit to accumulate on top, blocking water flow.
- Water Overflow Issues: During heavy rain, some customers reported water spilling over the edge of their gutters because it couldn’t pass through the clogged mesh.
- Frequent Maintenance Required: Contrary to LeafFilter’s “maintenance-free” claims, users say they had to clean the top of the system multiple times a year.
- Installation & Warranty Disputes: Others allege improper installation and poor customer support, especially when requesting warranty service or product removal.
Settlement Details: What Did LeafFilter Agree To?
In March 2023, LeafFilter reached a $5.2 million class action settlement to resolve the claims. If you were a LeafFilter customer between January 1, 2016 and June 24, 2022, and experienced issues with debris buildup or filed a service request, you may be entitled to compensation.
Eligible customers could receive:
- Up to $200 reimbursement for prior gutter cleaning services
- Up to three free future cleanings by LeafFilter technicians
- Partial reimbursement for system removal
More Legal Trouble: LeafFilter Telemarketing Lawsuit
In September 2024, LeafFilter was hit with another class action lawsuit—this time for allegedly violating the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) by making unsolicited robocalls and marketing calls without proper consent.
This adds to the growing list of concerns surrounding the company’s business practices and customer relations.
What Should Current and Future Customers Do?
If you’re considering LeafFilter or already have the system installed, here are a few tips:
- Inspect your gutters regularly, especially during fall and spring.
- Document any issues you experience (photos, service requests, receipts).
- Review warranty terms carefully, and don’t hesitate to push for service if you’re within coverage.
- Check your eligibility for class action benefits if you’ve had issues.
Is LeafFilter Worth It?
The LeafFilter class action lawsuit has highlighted serious performance and support concerns that every homeowner should know before buying.

says:
Leaf filter installed gutters and leaf filter on my house for $12000.00 first rain water doesn’t even hit the gutters. They came back and said you have a metal roof and water runs off to fast. The gutter company they hired would not come back and install the gutters right. My roof had a 3 inch overhang . Leaf filter tried 1.5 inches off to fix their problem. It made no difference. They installed a metal rail around my roof to slow the water down. That works. It also catches all the pine straw. That they said they would come once a year and clean out. No one has shown up in 3 years to do this job. I’m 65 now and had a stroke and should not be on a ladder. But I have to get up their every year and clean it off . I would never recommend this company to anyone. Very poor business practices….

I had same bad experience. False advertising. I’ve had gutter overflows and had them come out three times..
Unfortunately it’s the elderly who get suckered into buying this overpriced product.

I too thought they were over priced. I had a salesman come out and give a quote of 11,547.00 dollars. Called and got a quote for the same system different company and it was 5789.00 dollars. Big difference!

says:
Wish I knew about the lawsuit because they ruined the soffit on my house. They are a ripoff and deserve whatever they have to pay. They should be made to refund every customer they lied to. And make them fix what they damaged.
